ELEGY- epic tribute to an undisputable matriarch-Madam Sunday Darling Mathiais AMAZON OF THE MANGROVE A boy may cry But a man conceals his pain Yet tears from my watery eyes Drop like pebbles from raining sky The world is a little lonelier Without my amazing Amazon The Amazon of amazons even in the mangrove Sweetest mother in the world To whom maternity prospered With eight beautiful stars Shining with refection of sun and moon From her fruitful loins she bore me Five sizzling –star-studded –sisters she gave me To know how to treat a lady when I am grown Two brilliant brothers she gave me also To know how to relate with my fellow man when I am grown In her quest to unveil her true passion She persevered, persisted and perspired With rain drops of sweat Just to make me see the taste of tomorrow’s sweet Her house may not be enough big Yet her heart accommodated all- Nurtured from one pot to plates We licked fingers and belched in satisfaction Even when slim resources where Her generosity in plenty ever was Her charity prevailed against prejudice Her courage was a soldier of morality In her sacred heart laid an inner space An inner space of peace and tranquility That flowed like the tide of River Nun In nearness and distance, her life was a rallying point With compassion as her stock in trade Rendered reason for every season How soft and sweet a pillow my head rested Until her pilgrimage on earth ended Yet she still lives on in my heart and others too Her legacies are dancing branches attached to unfading memory Ever green like chlorophyll that flourish in tropical mangrove leaves Her smile remind me of riches that lie in golden future times To her Lord and lover- God Almighty she returned In eternal bliss to meet again at the resurrection day A day when separation will be extinct To my matron of hope and Amazon of the mangrove I lay this tribute as you rest in your sleep. UNDER RAIN AND SUNSHINE Instead of her to go let the sun hit Instead of her to go Let the rain beat If she stay and not go In sunshine she will provide shade In rainfall she will provide roof Now she is sudden gone The sun will ferociously shine The rain will fall cart and dog But her memory will stand green ever As roof over rainfall And shade under sunshine By Hephzibah Suobo (first fruit of her womb)
