ELLEN KELLY AUSTRALIAN TREASURE! ELLEN Kelly lived out the last of her life as a much respected citizen of Greta (Victoria), but she never forgave the police for the devastation of her family. People blame my boys for all that has happened, she told the Sydney Sun newspaper in 1911, when she was 79. They should blame the police. They were at the bottom of it all. Oh, you cant imagine what I have suffered. You cant imagine what it means to us poor people in the Bush, to be taken away from all that we have - our children. But they took me away, and I had to stay in prison for years. And for nothing - nothing at all. Ellen outlived seven of her twelve children and died on the 27th March 1923, aged 91, in a house Jim Kelly built for her. She had never recovered from the death of her beloved grandson Fred Foster, a beekeeper who reminded her so much of her eldest boy, Ned. She raised. Fred in Greta from the age of nine after the death of his mother, Kate KELLY. The nephew of Australias most famous folk hero , Fred died of wounds received fighting for Australia against the Germans at the first battle of Bullecourt near Areas in France on 15th of April 1917. His dying words were; Kiss me Granny. (page 366, from Sons of the Southern Cross, by Grantlee Kieza) A lady that life gave a real kick in the guts but she got up and kept going. A lady that typifies the old Australian Bush traditions. The photo of Ellen KELLY was taken. In 1911, when she was 79.
