EMERGING FROM THE WRECKAGE In this close-up view of the galaxy group known as Stephans Quintet (covered here: on.fb.me/VHp4rM), cosmic collisions are wreaking havoc on the structures of galaxies. Tidal interactions drag trails of stars into distorted shapes and create filaments of dust. Gas, dust, and stars are being ripped from what must have been a more orderly formation in the distant past. New star clusters and dwarf galaxies are grouping together amid the wreckage, seen as knotted clusters in the warped galactic arms. The cluster is located 300 million light-years away in the constellation of Pegasus. -RLO Source: spacetelescope.org/images/opo0122a/ Image credit: NASA/ESA, Jayanne English (University of Manitoba), Sally Hunsberger (Pennsylvania State University), Zolt Levay ( Space Telescope Science Institute), Sarah Gallagher (Pennsylvania State University), and Jane Charlton (Pennsylvania State University)
