SUNDAY ZAZEN GATHERINGS Aug. 3, 24, 31; 2014. 8:30 - 10:30 am (There will be no beginners zazen instruction on Aug. 3) Arrival pre-sit facing the wall from 30 min. prior. PUBLIC WELCOME! Open Donation Basket. (members: free) Vegetarian snack offerings are welcome, but not required. Zazen/ Beginners zazen instruction, chanting, kinhin walking Zen, reading or Dharma Talk. Afterwards we have tea and conversation. Wear: Comfortable and loose long pants or long skirt in solid neutral colors for zazen. Please do no wear tank tops or shorts. Outdoor slip-on shoes helpful. Saturday, August 9, 2014. 5:30 - 10 pm Public, Kids, and Sangha Welcome! Open Donation Basket Potluck vegetarian offerings for supper and late night refreshments are welcome, but not required. The Obon Lantern Ceremony is a Buddhist tradition which honors and celebrates friends, family, and loved ones who have passed on. Vegetarian supper -- lantern painting -- short zazen meditation -- indoor walking meditation -- Dharma talk or reading -- Obon/Segaki Buddhist chanting ceremony -- purifying of lanterns and calling of the names by participants -- procession and floating of lanterns on the nights pond -- bonfire -- refreshments at end of evening If you wish to bring a framed photo of someone who has died, it will be placed on the altar for the ceremony. If you cannot attend the ceremony, but wish to have the name/s called out of someone who has passed on, please email us and we will include them in the ceremony. Feel free to bring precious objects such as letters, etc., that you would like to let go of by placing them in the bonfire. To Attend: Please email SUMMER WEEKEND SESSHIN Aug. 15-17, 2014 Begins on opening night with 5:30 pm supper and ends by 5 pm on Sunday. There may or may not be Dharma Talks or one-on-one Dharma meetings with Genro Sensei at this sesshin. Sesshin is an incomparable opportunity to look into the self, detox the mind, and to be open to deep insights. This is a zazen intensive retreat, a time to immerse fully in zazen and present mindedness practice. Highly recommended for the serious study of Zen. Participants reside at the Zendo, keep silence, and follow a full schedule of zazen with chanting, prostrations, silent outdoor walks, work practice, Dharma talks or readings, and formal vegetarian meals. Sesshin orientation for first time participants. Full time participation is recommended, however part time on Friday or Saturday is also possible. Pre-requisite: Prior zazen experience. Sesshin is a worthwhile challenge and doable; a clear and dedicated commitment to complete the sesshin from beginning to end is essential. Suggested Donation: Full-time: $190. (members: $160.) (students & hardship: $130. or inquire re work exchange). Part-time Saturday: 9:30 am - 12 pm w/ optional lunch: Open Donation Basket (+$10 lunch); or 9:30 am - 5 pm w/ optional supper: $45, members: $35, students & hardship: $25 or inquire re work exchange. What to Bring: Zazen wear, weather appropriate outdoor work clothes for deer tick area, rain gear, outdoor shoes and slip-on shoes, flashlight, unscented toiletries, and sleeping bag.
