EN - Hamburg summit 11.10 - China meets Europe - Signing of the Golden book by Martin Schulz - European Parliament President, Li Keqiang 李克强, Prime Minister of the Peoples Republic of China and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany. Martin Schulz, President of the European Parliament, Europe is not a small player. 500 million consumers in Europe represent still the richest part of the world. In comparison with China, we are still very strong. Nevertheless, we are economically only strong the moment we are united. Europe at the time being is on the way to be divided and the Europeans are fighting each other instead of working together and to compete with other parts of the world, that is our first problem. (...) The second problem is that we are for sure a continent based on human rights, democracy and the rule of law and if we respect all these fundamental social and economic rights, the consumer protection, data protection, the individual rights, we are competing with China which is often not respecting those rules and therefore in world where there are those that violate our values and are more competitive than we are ourselves, than we have a lot of problems. Therefore to discuss with the Chinese about our fundamental rights and to ask them to respect our standards, is key also for the EU for the future. © Frédérick Moulin 2014 - EU2014 - All rights reserved.
