END Polio NOW The United States Government has donated more to the GPEI than any other donor, contributing over $2.1 billion since its launch in 1988. This represents more than 20% of the approximately $10.5 billion invested globally in eradicating the disease from endemic countries.25 If the eradication of polio is achieved by 2018, one model has found that the GPEI will have saved the world $40 to $50 billion from 1988 through 2035.38 In recent years, USG funding for polio efforts has remained relatively stable (see Figure 2). Most polio funding (around 75%) is provided to CDC, with about a quarter of total funding provided to USAID.
