Libby Joiner is running for Lawrence Countys Board of Education, District 3, and she is a strong proponent of including humane education in schools. We support her candidacy. Wed love to see kids learn the importance of treating animals ethically and compassionately---and grow up to become responsible pet owners. Its probably the best way to effect meaningful, lasting change in Alabamians attitudes toward animals. District 8 (Morgan County) CRITICAL RACE Rex Cheatham ENDORSED BY AVRAL. District 38 (Chambers and Lee Counties) Isaac Whorton heads to the House District 39 (Cherokee, Cleburne and DeKalb Counties) CRITICAL RACE Richard Lindsey voted against keeping low-cost spay/neuter clinics open Heath Jones—ENDORSED BY AVRAL. Richard Lindsey has supported us in the past but did vote against the low-cost spay/neuter clinics. HEATH JONES is part of the animal rescue community and actively saves homeless animals. He also works with Semper Fi rescue to transport animals to new forever homes. So, in this case, we strongly encourage you to get out the vote for Heath Jones. Let everyone in your district know he is EXTREMELY animal-friendly. This is the kind of legislator the companion animals of Alabama need. If this is your district, spread the word to vote for Heath Jones. District 40 (Calhoun County) Ted Copland—Ted wrote the following to AVRAL: “I have always been an animal rights activist. As a matter of fact, as a side note, last night we saved a kitten out of the back of a Coca-Cola machine at the grocery store in Alexandria. Personally, my Labrador, whose pictures you can see on my Facebook page, is a rescue dog that was set to be put down a few months ago. My wife and I have in the past had several pets that we have rescued. I do believe that it is important to regulate the number of animals we have running at large. I believe one of the best ways to handle that is through spay and neuter programs. It is important that those services are offered for a price that everyone can afford. As the Anniston City Prosecutor I am constantly dealing with animal cruelty cases. We take a hard stand against those. Although I have respect for my opponent KL Brown, I am more of a voice. I stand up for those things that I be lieve are right. I will do the same with regard to these issues.” Koven L. (K.L.) Brown—K.L Brown has attended AVRAL functions and is a serious cat lover. If you ever meet him and are at a loss for conversation, mention his cats. Representative Brown has always supported our legislation. BOTTOM LINE: Both Copland and Brown are pro-animal. The distinction between the two candidates is basically one of style. Brown seems to be quiet, placid, reserved. Copland, as is evident from his statement, is outspoken and an animal activist. AVRAL likes Brown, but we’re thinking the animals need Copland’s voice this time around. District 41 (Shelby County) Mike Hill returns to the House District 42 (Chilton and Shelby Counties) James M. (Jimmy) Martin heads to the House District 43 (Chilton and Shelby Counties) Arnold Mooney heads to the House District 44 (Jefferson County) Danny Garrett heads to the House District 45 (St. Clair and Jefferson Counties) Dickie Drake returns to the House District 46 (Jefferson County) David Faulkner heads to the House District 47 (Jefferson County) Salvatore Bambinelli—no response. Jack Williams ENDORSED BY AVRAL. Though Rep. Williams voted in support of the s/n clinics in 2013, he voted against them in 2014. AVRAL had a long conversation with him about this, he stated he made a mistake and assumed the bill in 2014 had changed dramatically. He learned after the vote this was false, regrets casting a negative vote and has researched the issue. He now firmly supports low-cost spay/neuter clinics as he did in 2013. Moreover, Rep. Williams has introduced a number of bills for animal protection in the past (for example, animal cruelty), and has several new animal protection bills in the works. He also supports the legislation AVRAL will introduce in the upcoming legislative session. He is enthusiastic about working with AVRAL. Despite his bad vote in 2014, his many other animal welfare bills and his willingness to work closely with AVRAL make him our choice. He has clearly seen the error of his ways regarding his vote in 2014 on s/n and has been extremely humble and apologetic.
