ENHANCING WOMEN PARTICIPATION IN LEADERSHIP 8/2/13 Women have been known from time immemorial to be the major contributor to the totality of mans development. They began this from our ancestral home of Eden, provided the necessary support on which the man relied on to subdue his territory. Through the imposed chauvinism of man, woman has been relegated to the background of human development and the world has not been better for it. Time has been long, since creation and the world has not witness commensurate development, economy is daily getting melt down and peace has eluded man. Women are known to be consummate managers who manage tactfully the home for centuries, till now, that singular action has not been taken over by man. The importance of home management cannot be over flogged, as home is to a nation as cell is to a living thing. Women have been known to manage the home perfectly well despite economic deficiency of the nation, through wise and active utilization of available little resources. This is due to the latently deposited ability of woman to use fund for necessary purposes and still keep some aside for exigencies. To maximally harness the abilities of women, we must allow them to occupy some important leadership positions so that they can contribute to ameliorate world worsening situation. Women should be given preferential advantage in positions that had long been erroneously held as exclusive preserve for man. Gender sensitivity should be inscribed on the tablet of nation’s politics through sensitizations and campaign that will expose the positive angle of women through past and present achievement of heroine and models; that have bestrode their societies like colossus and have left their mark on the sand of time. The common cliché of equality before the law should not be enshrine literarily, it should be made to act in the true sanctity of equality. Some societies and religions believe that women are not up to second fiddles and should not be allowed to participate or contribute to any discourse, talk more of being placed in position of authority. Most of the present holders of positions of authorities are students of this school of thought and would not be well attuned to allow women free voice; though they are constraint to, because women support would be needed in their quest for positions. Such belief is still holding back developments, as more women in leadership positions would have contributed to make our society a better place through naturally deposited ability. Girl education should be encouraged from the cradle which is from the home, the idea of giving more attention to a male child education and training by parents should be discountenanced, let female children be prepared from babyhood for a position of authority, she should be encouraged to have both a say and a stand on issues at hand. She should be given the early enlightenment on her society and how to contribute to its development. She should be politically motivated and encouraged to participate in all electioneering processes with equal fervency and mien as male. Law should be enacted that specifically give a percentage quota for elective positions to women. This will encourage more participations of women in politics as there are assurances that the position will not be usurped by the men folks and they would not be rigged out of contest.
