EVERTON have turned down a £12million bid from Manchester United for Leighton Baines. New Red Devils boss David Moyes is desperate to capture the England left-back from his former club. But the Toffees are ready to fight tooth and nail to keep hold of their prized asset, who has two years left on his current deal. Everton chief Roberto Martinez hinted a fortnight ago he was prepared to throw money at Baines, 28, to keep him at Goodison Park. And the ex-Latics player this week admitted he was pleased to be reunited with his former manager. Baines said: “He has a different style to what we have been used to but I think it is progressive and it will move us forward. “It is also exciting for the players to be able to try that now.” Baines is currently behind Ashley Cole in the England pecking order but a move to Old Trafford could help him get ahead of the Chelsea star in time for next summer’s World Cup. The Toffees ace was named in last season’s PFA Premier League Team of the Year ahead of both Cole and United’s current first-choice left-back Patrice Evra. Evra, 32, would see his Red Devils future put under threat should Moyes get his man and has already been linked with a return to Monaco.(The Sun)
