EVERY WEDNESDAY AND FRIDAY AFTERNOON!!!! FREE FOOD PANTRY! In our daily work with families in need in West Oakland, we at Prescott-Joseph had become increasingly aware of the tremendous need for a food pantry in the Lower Bottom neighborhood of West Oakland. full and partial closures of food banks and pantries such as Women’s Economic Agenda Project (WEAP), Catholic Charities, St. Patrick, and Mt. Zion) have left a significant gap in emergency food services for a community that is already depressed with high poverty and unemployment rates. To fill the increasing gap in food security, Prescott-Joseph Center established the West Oakland Food Pantry. This food safety net program is in place as one initiative to help alleviate hunger and strengthen individuals and families living in West Oakland. There is an estimated 31,118 West Oakland residents (versus the 2000 Census count of 21,048 residents) with 38% living below the poverty level and approximately half (1/2) of the households with an annual income of less than 20,000. Every month PJCCE gives support to families who are in need of emergency food and other essential supplies in partnership with the Alameda County Food Bank and thanks to the generous support of the San Francisco Foundation, Crescent-Porter-Hale Foundation and Individual donations.
