EVERYONE HAS A CAMERA AND NO ONE HAS AN EYE Having cut our video eye teeth in the sixties and now in our sixties, Peter Brownscombe, Jeff Strate and I were having flashbacks. Pete describes his education as DOD: drop out and drift. He is a freelance cameraman who works worldwide out of New York. A great eye, he bemoans the state of the craft. “We’re in a transitional phase. It is much harder to make money. Each month a new little contraption comes out.” Everyone has a camera and no one has an eye. He derisively pointed to a PBS contraption, the Hatcam. pbs.org/newshour/rundown/hatcam-goes-to-the-conventions/ This old showreel shows off some of the cool videos he made with Deanna Kamiel once upon a time. youtu.be/VxKtPT6Utho He’s done some of the camera work for a portrait of Sonia Sanchez, coming soon. attiegoldwater/soniasanchez/home.htm Pete described how the annual world festival for public broadcasting, INPUT, changed. It began as a producers’ assembly. People who made TV showed, and talked, and argued. Now the executives schedule the gathering in a place they want to vacation, in the spring when it will be lovely. But that is when it costs the most to travel, and independents are most likely to be working, rather than January say. So those who actually make the art have stopped going and those who manage have managed to corrupt yet another forum for engaged community. We felt a little like old fogies bemoaning the way the world has whirled. On our friend Jeff, Pete writes, “Jeff Strate defies description.” https://facebook/photo.php?fbid=10150218804347014&l=f66286c7d9
