EVERYONE...THIS IS TO YOU AND THE EDUCATION OF YOUR CHILDREN.... NCATA Members, While I am a little disappointed by the latest version of the budget that was released on Sunday, July 21, 2013 I am not totally defeated because I know within my heart that NCATA has made a difference throughout this 2013 legislative lesson. As I set here thinking on last night my mind kept going back to the movie “NOT EASILY BROKEN.” I believe as TEACHER ASSISTANTS and NCATA that no matter what comes our way we are “NOT EASILY BROKEN.” I don’t know about you, BUT there is a lot of fight left in me, and this latest budget only makes me want to speak out even more on behalf of the students, public education, and of course TEACHER ASSISTANTS. Teacher Assistants are one of the strongest groups of individuals that I personally know. This is not something new to us so let’s roll up sleeves, and jumps right in and get to work continuing to fight for the priorities that are near and dear to our hearts. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE! I encourage you that as soon as you read this email you stop what you are doing, and immediately reach out to your representatives in the NC House of Representatives and the NC Senate. This latest budget has to go back before the full house and the full senate before it is presented to the Governor. We still have time to make a difference and weigh in on the hearts and minds of those that represent us. Ladies and Gentlemen we made a difference with the House’s version of the budget, and we can do it again! Remember write, call, email, do whatever is takes in order to reach out to those that represent you. In my heart I know at the end of the day that we as NCATA, teacher assistants, and professionals have done everything that we could, were advised to do, and we will continue to do until this process is complete. I ask each of you, no matter what religious background or faith that you come from, to take this opportunity to say a prayer, get in a private place, and reach out on behalf of our children, public education, and teacher assistants as a whole. The reality of it all is that the latest version of the budget has a 21% reduction to teacher assistants. This is a huge difference from the 4 % reduction that was in the house version of the budget, but is 4% better than the 25% reduction that was proposed in the senate’s version. WE ARE AT A CRITICAL TIME! WE MUST ACT, AND WE MUST DO IT QUICKLY! WHATEVER YOU DO: DO NOT GIVE UP, DO NOT GIVE OUT, AND DO NOT GIVE IN! HANG IN, HANG OUT, AND HANG ON! Remember it’s always the darkest right before the dawn! William Johnston NCATA State First Vice-President
