Apply tissue raw or as boiled poultice. MANUKA Crushed bark is steeped in boiling water a and then applied to swollen areas. HARAKEKE Roast roots on a wood fire beat into a pulp and use warm as a poultice for swollen points and limbs. NECK SICKNESS * THROAT PAIN KOHEKOHE Gargle the Astringent pulp of the inner bark. KOWHAI Steep leaves in boiling water and drink the liquid (does not keep and needs to be made new each day). MANUKA Boil inner bark and use the liquid as a gargle. POHUTUKAWA Extract honey (Nectar) in flowers and when a quantity is gathered suck through a read. TONIC BLOOD PURIFIER KAHIKATEA Bark and wood chips were steeped in boiling water and drink as a tonic. KAWAKAWA Juice expressed from heated leaves drunk as a tonic and blood purifier. KOHEKOHEA weak solution of leaves was taken as a tonic by invalids. RINGWORM KOWHAI Rub ashes over heads RATA Decoction of bark for ringworm. SKIN DISEASES HINAU Use as a bath - a hot decoction of the bark in which patients can be soaked in, will cure severest skin diseases. SKIN RASH KAWAKAWA Boil leaves and apply to skin, or take internally. KOHEKOHE taken 3 times a day before meals - Fermentation of KoheKohe bark, Manuka bark, Korari Stalk, puawanaga vine and Kanuka leaves. KOWHAI Infusion of bark mixed with wood ashes, allowed to dry. Rub on bodies, (Crush bark of downhill root and boil in water for some hours). SORES MAMAKU Scrape hairy skin from inner curled frond to expose slimey tissue. Apply tissue raw or boiled straight or as poultice. (Tissue is scraped out). RANGIORA Apply leaves to old sores. PUKATEA Bark removed, outer rind scraped off and steeped in water. Use as a lotion for obstinate running sores. HARAKEKE Use gum found in the fold of the leaf near the root, and apply to old Sores. BRUISES KAWAKAWA Boil leaves and bath serious bruises with the hot liquid. KOWHAI Crush bark of downhill growing root and steep in boiling water for 3 hours. Bathe bruises. KAHIKATEA Steep bark of sunny side in hot water for some hours and bath bruises with liquid. BURNS KAHIKATEA Apply gun to burns. RIMU Bruise bark to a pulp and apply to burns. MAKOMAKU Boil leaves in water and bathe to soothe burns. HARAKEKE (a) The gum found at the base of the leaves is placed in water to soften then apply to burns and scolds. b) Finely scrape or slice the butts of the leaves and place in water (small amount)Mould into a poultice and apply. HOROPITO Strip bark from sunny side-a cut away inner bark which is then broken into pieces Steep in hot water and apply to burns if desired mix with olive oil. (Burns treated this way no matter how severe, heal leaving no scar). KOPAKOPA Boil leaves in water and use liquid for burns and scolds. KOPATA Use lotion of leaves for burns. TOETOE Burn toetoe and collect charcoal, powder it and add a little water to make a poultice MAMAKU The hairy skin of the inner curled frond is scraped of to expose slimey tissue, this applied to the cut raw, or as heated poultice. DIARRHEA MAMAKU Chew gum of fern. POHUTAKAWA Steep inner bark in water for a short time and the decoction is taken internally. DYSENTARY (Severe diarrhea) MANUKA Young Shoots chewed and swallowed. RATA Drink decoction of the bark. POHUTUKAWA Steep inner bark in water and take internally the decoction (extract of essence by boiling down). HARAKEKE Pound the fresh root and use juice internally. ECZEMA KAWAKAWA/ONGAONGA Boil leaves of kawakawa with bark of ongaonga (Tree Nettle) and apply externally, may also be take internally. EYE TROUBLES MAKOMAKO Boil leaves in a little water. Use liquid to bathe sore eyes. Makomako (Soak bark in cold water)and bathe eyes with liquid. MAMAKU Apply slimey tissue of inner curled frond after the hairy skin has been scraped off. Apply tissue raw or as boiled poultice. MANUKA Boil inner bark. Bathe eyes sore from smoke of winter fires. TITOKI From the fruit extract green coloured oil and apply to weak eyes. FEVER KOHEKOHE An infusion of the leaves in boiling water was made and the vapour inhaled. MANUKA : KAHIKATEA Boil leaves and allow liquid to cool - drink. MIRO Harvest the fruit and obtain oil from pulpy outer layer-use to treat fever. MUSCULAR NIKAU Tree Pith cooked and eaten by expectant mothers for muscular relaxation and to produce a mild bowel movement. PAIN KILLER MANUKA : KAHIKATEA Take externally an infusion of the inner bark, rub on to skin. PILES (Bleeding from the bowel) KOHEKOHE- decoction of KoheKohe, Bark, Manuka bark, Korari stalk, puawananga vine and Kanuka leaves-taken 3 times a day before meals, Korari/Horakeke - Pound fresh-root and use juice internally to -stop bleeding from the bowel PRE – NATAL NIKAU pith cooked and eaten before confinement to produce a mild bowel action and muscular relaxation. POST NATAL KOHUTHUTU Vapour bath .for 1st and 2nd day after confinement for 1.hour each. Soak leaves in water a while, heat ingredients - leaves of fuchsia, mangeao and tataramoa. POISONED LIMBS MAMUKA for poisoned hands/legs apply slimey tissue of inner curled frond after hairy tissue is scraped off. Apply raw or as boiled poultice. REUMATIC PAINS KAWAKAWA Reduce leaves to a pulp in hot water. Use as a pack on part of the body with pain especially points. MAKOMAKO Boil leaves in a little water and use liquid to bathe joints. Boil bark in a large amount of water. Soak in while still hot (Soothe and heals). MANUKA Rub into rheumatic points warm liquid of boiled leaves and bark.
