**EXTRA LONG MOVIE REVIEW** Read at your own risk. :P After reading and watching 2 States, I am confident that Chetan Bhagats wife neither (proof) read the book nor watched the movie, because if she did, shed have ensured that her character was portrayed correctly. Come to think about it, I think even Chetan Bhagat didnt care about how authentic the movie seemed, and heres why. Before I move on to my reasons, I want to say that I can give an unbiased opinion here as a child of a Tamilian mother and Punjabi father, which is why I loved this story when I read it, especially because of how accurate and funny it was. My mother didnt watch the movie from the moment Ananya took a bite of the chicken piece, but thats just her. :P But I have complaints that are beyond Ananyas breaking the TamBrahm code. Heres what they are... 1. Casting an actress who cant pronounce Tamil, as a Tamilian girl, was mistake number one. All her other mannerisms, especially her way of speaking, were that of a North Indian. The argument that shes not a Tamilian and therefore cannot talk like one is stupid, because as an actor, thats her job. Sadhna Sargam and Adnan Sami have sung Tamil songs without sounding like Non-Tamilians, so speaking a few Tamil words authentically should have been a piece of cake. Its funny how others mimick a South Indians accent so easily but cant do a good job when theyre required to speak the language. 2. Yes, people in Chennai go to the beach dressed in their Bharata Natyam costumes. Thats just about as true as Punjabi people walking on the streets wearing Bhangra costumes. 3. A few subtitles for Tamil dialogues would have been good for those who dont understand the language. 4. Shocking that a music teacher cannot recognise such amazing talent! 5. Amazing punch lines were eliminated from the movie. One was where Krish goes to Ananyas house for the first time and talks about his Punjabi sensibilities that taught him to bring to someones house as many calories as they would consume. Another great one was Krishs reference to Ghee when Harish asks Ananya about being pure (referring to her virginity) These are just a few. Thankfully, the something something (referring to Tamil words in the book) was transalted into actual Tamil words in the movie. That was the only saving grace. All other actors in the movie played their part really well, except Alia (and I actually like her.) She should have worked harder and done a bit more research. I have no complaints regarding the Punjabi part of the movie. The Punjabis got that right! ;) Thats it. I am done with my rant!
