Earlier this week I had the opportunity to speak with Peter ONeil at the Vancouver Sun about the Federal New Democrat approach to International Trade. We believe that each potential agreement needs to be assessed on its individual merits, and pass a series of tests. What use to assess these potential agreements are the answers to the following questions: Is the other country democratic and respectful of labour and environmental rights? Is it large or strategically significant enough to justify a trade and investment deal? And does the deal itself pass muster, in terms of whether the specific provisions that benefit Canadian investors and exporters outweigh the potential negatives?
