Earlier today, United Airlines announced that next year, their frequent flier program will go revenue based. That means miles earned will be calculated on the price of your ticket and your elite status level not on the number of miles actually flown. For example, under the current system, LA to Sydney gets you 15,000 miles in economy. Under the new one, half that on a $1,500 ticket. With its recent redemption devaluation, poor customer service, and bad product, United keeps giving people less and less reason to fly them. MileagePlus was their saving grace but this move to a revenue share will hurt the majority of their frequent fliers. You may want to consider moving to American Airlines, who because they are tied up with their merger, wont follow suit for at least two years (if they do at all). AA now has the best program out there and Im glad I moved out of United a few years ago. Switch and tell AA why you are moving so they dont change their program. If their loyalty program gives them a competitive advantage, they may think twice about changing it. Another good option is the Alaskan Airlines frequent flier program, which still has great redemption partners and hasnt devalued their program. You can always fly AA or DL and bank miles to Alaska!
