Earlier today my son(14)asked can he walk to the park to play basketball like he usually does. But this was the first time since the indictment came out and I found out about the little black boy that was killed in the park. I gave him the normal speech like any mother would. Things like be careful, cross the street safe, dont talk to strangers and most importantly call and let me know that you made it. Usually he is on point when it comes to calling me but today he didnt call right away when he got there. I am pretty much good at timing on what time he gets to park which is about 5-10 minutes depending on how fast he walks. But when my phone didnt ring right off ,my heart and anxiety went crazy because just 2 years the police was call on my son because he looks suspicious ( he was also walking to the park). At that time he was12 looking like Steve Urkel bouncing a basketball. An older white lady call and said he looked like he was going to break into people cars. Mind you, I live in predominantly white neighborhood. My child was walking on the sidewalk and the vehicles was parked alongside the sidewalk. He was stop and questioned without his parent being called or notified . Of course he had his cellphone and called me right away. Lol, of course I flew like I was superman trying to get to where he was. Which was less than a minute drive from my house. And yes, I filed a complaint. I am writing this to say that it is sad that I have to fear for my son when he is away from my presence even if it is going to play basketball. Please lets pray for our on black sons.
