Early Trane . . . Heres John Coltrane with Johnny Hodges small group. This recording is believed to be from a dance gig in California, probably in or around Los Angeles, in Summer 1954. The band: Johnny Hodges--alto sax; Harold Shorty Baker--trumpet; Lawrence Brown--trombone; John Coltrane--tenor sax; possibly Call Cobbs--piano; John Williams--bass; James Johnson--drums 0:00-4:29 Thru for the Night (Trane solos) 4:30-9:04 Castle Rock (Trane is featured throughout) 9:05-16:34 In a Mellotone (Trane solos) 16:37-19:30 Dont Blame Me (Trane is featured throughout) In 1962, guitarist Bill Harris wrote: But despite all suppression, genius always shows through as it did when I first heard JOHN COLTRANE. While touring with the Billy Eckstine show, I heard John Coltrane take his break in Johnny Hodges big band [during the tune] Castle Rock. It was one of my most rewarding musical experiences. By the time I reached the wings, John Coltrane was leading the band and every person in the hall was completely possessed with his playing, including Hodges. [From The Baltimore Afro-American, March 3, 1962, p. 15; Bill Harris was the guest columnist that day for The Jazz Bit, filling in for columnist Louise D. Stone]
