While touring with the Billy Eckstine show, I heard John Coltrane take his break in Johnny Hodges big band [during the tune] Castle Rock. It was one of my most rewarding musical experiences. By the time I reached the wings, John Coltrane was leading the band and every person in the hall was completely possessed with his playing, including Hodges.
