Early today, I crossed MacArthur Avenue to buy breakfast, and saw the bakery selling toasted siopao. It wasnt even 9am yet, and already there was a queue of about 4 people already. The signs were all over the place: Please fall in line. And so I did. The gentleman ahead of me looked like a grandpa; the lady behind me looked in her 40s; and the rest were all working age people. Then a couple arrived, with the guy falling in line, and the girl with long curly hair, a white off the shoulder tshirt, black tank top, skinny jeans went over to the counter to get the attention of the salesperson. Lady behind me said Miss, dito yung pila. Girl muttered something unintelligible. At first I thought she was a food inspector or something because she was waving a clipboard around in her hand. I asked the lady behind ano raw? Lady said that the girl was asking about steamed, not toasted siopao. And she again courteously spoke up Miss, dito yung pila. And girl flounced off from the counter all the time saying something about siopao, but the only thing I understood from the early morning rant was when she said Gets?? at the end of her tirade. And off she went to talk to the guy friend in a loud carrying voice about how she has memorized all the formulas and equation blah blah blah. After a while, the noise subsided. And lolo said that dapat naman lahat nakapila dahil iisa lang ang serbidora. And lady behind was muttering pasosyal pa, palengkera naman ang boses niya. At may punto si Ate. The girl had that kind of voice which registers in the higher range, and was what my highschool classmates and I described by a naughty term, referencing the lady parts. And then right after I got my box of toasted siopao, I went over to the Jollibee next door, and whose eyes should I meet as I opened the door but those of the nasty girl. My eyebrows went up by reflex, and girl dropped her eyes. And yes, the toasted siopao was delicious, specially when it is still toasty hot.
