Earth Science Picture of the Day Cola de Caballo Falls Posted: 19 Mar 2014 12:01 AM PDT In the Cumbres de Monterrey National Park of northern Mexico the crystal clear water of Cascada Cola de Caballo plunge 82 ft (25 m) into this tantalizing pool at its base. These charming falls are said to resemble a ponytail -- cola de caballo is Spanish for horse tail. As numerous caves are found in the park, waterfalls here are often drained by subterranean streams. Cascada Cola de Caballo is accessible to the public via a walking path and staircases allowing visitors to observe it from several different angles. Photo taken on January 25, 2014. ME: Have been there, though considerably more water, and a lot of mist. Lot of wildflowers and clouds of butterflies. Magical.
