Echiejile Hails CHAN ‘Jinx-Breakers’ -Happy With South Africa 2014 Ticket Outgoing Sporting Braga of Portugal left-wing-back, Elderson Uwa Echiejile has added his voice to long line of accolades that are flowing in favour of the home-based Eagles, following their qualification for the Championship of African Nations. While noting that the domestic stars have pulled off a historic feat in taking Nigeria to its first outing at the CHAN, which was staged over the past two editions without the Eagles in attendance, Echiejile said he is happy to see the country’s football soar. Nigeria missed the first two editions of the championship losing out to Ghana in the inaugural edition in Cote d’Ivoire in 2009 while the Republic of Niger ended the dreams of the Eagles’ path to Sudan 2011. Echiejile noted further that Saturday’s game in Abidjan was not easy, especially as the Ivorians scored two quick goals in the first half and needed only one more to scupper Nigeria’s jinx-breaking hopes, and commended the players for their resolute effort. The 2-0 loss took Nigeria ahead 4-3 on aggregate, to join Morocco, Libya, Ghana, Mauritania, Ethiopia, Uganda, Congo and hosts South Africa in the 16-team finals due from January 11 next year, and Echiejile took to Twitter to express his delight. “It was tough in Abidjan, but delighted the boys still fought to qualify for the CHAN for the first time,” Elderson tweeted.
