Eclectic Concerts November event takes place Thursday November 13th, 7-9pm with an evening of “Perfectly Pianissimo Percussion.” Musicians for the evening include John Kinzie, Julie Strom, Paul Mullikin, Scott Higgins, and Kevin Matthews in a concert that promises a good collection of percussion pieces played quietly. (The audience will not need earplugs!) Event takes place at Mortgage West Gallery, 1705 S. Pearl St., in Denvers Historic Old South Pearl District. John Kinzie is Director of Percussion Studies of the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver and is the Principal Percussionist of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, a position he has held since 1985. Prior to his appointment with the CSO, Mr. Kinzie was Principal Percussionist with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, a position he won at the age of 19. He also performs with the CSO chamber group, Once Upon a Time, a group formed to inspire the imaginations of young school children and to excite them about music. Julie Strom is double recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship, currently touring with her classical/jazz percussion duo, junKtion. She loves to cross boundaries with a variety of styles and works as an orchestral and chamber musician, drummer, soloist, teacher, researcher, and composer. Ms. Strom has studied, taught, performed and recorded in various places in North America, Asia and all over Western and Eastern Europe. She recently received her Doctor of Arts degree in percussion performance from the University of Northern Colorado. Paul Mullikin attended Denver School of the Arts and graduated from DU in 2005 where he studied percussion, drumset, composition, and jazz piano. He is a regular fixture on the Colorado music scene, performing with the Boulder Philharmonic, Colorado Ballet, Colorado Symphony, Denver Center Theater Company, and countless jazz ensembles. His first album as a band leader, Time is Now, is due out in December. Scott Higgins is percussionist with the Colorado Ballet, former Principal Percussionist with the Central City Opera, and co-director of the Denver Eclectic Ensemble. He received his Masters in Performance with Alan Abel at Temple University and Bachelor of Music with Jim Atwood at Loyola University in New Orleans. He was also previously a member of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra as section and acting principal percussionist. Kevin Matthews earned a BM in percussion at the University of Denvers Lamont School of music studying under John Kinzie. He appears regularly with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Breckenridge Music Festival, and Wyoming Symphony among others. He can also be found playing drums in jazz, pop and r&b settings, recently completing a two month tour of the western U.S. with Denver natives the Andy Hackbarth Band. Denver Eclectic Concerts express purpose is to broaden the public’s exposure to diverse and unique music through a series of monthly concerts early fall through May. Performances are specifically presented by talented local artists who contribute immensely to the exceptional flavor and richness of the culture of Denver. The performers preface each musical performance with an informative and highly interesting short discussion. Mortgage West Gallery offers an ambient, intimate setting.
