Edition 21 of WWWF Happenings WWWF @ New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden - August 28, 1978 (announced at 22,000 with 4,000 at Felt Forum) Stan Stasiak fought Dominic DeNucci to a 20-minute time-limit draw at 19:48; the match ended just as DeNucci knocked Stasiak to the mat with a flurry of jabs Haystacks Calhoun pinned Baron Mikel Scicluna at 7:12 with a splash, even though Scicluna clearly kicked out before the 3-count Victor Rivera pinned SD Jones at 10:21 with a suplex after Jones ran shoulder-first into the ring post when Rivera moved out of the way; prior to the bout, Freddie Blassie escorted Rivera to the ring Ivan Koloff defeated WWWF World Champion Bob Backlund via referees decision at 30:11 when the referee deemed Backlund unable to continue due to facial cuts; prior to the bout, Backlund was escorted to the ring by Arnold Skaaland while Capt. Lou Albano came out with the challenger; after the bout, Backlund hit the atomic drop, which sent the challenger out of the ring, and then got on the microphone to challenge him to come back out, which Koloff failed to do. Peter Maivia defeated Luke Graham via disqualification at 14:02 after Graham continuously punched Maivia in the throat; during the bout, bodybuilder Dan Lurie briefly joined Vince McMahon on commentary, discussed the Sept. 9 Lincoln Center bodybuilding competitions, and said Ivan Putski would be inducted into the hall of fame; after the contest, Maivia attacked Graham and knocked him to the floor Dusty Rhodes defeated Superstar Billy Graham in a No DQ bullrope match at 6:28 via count-out after Rhodes hit Graham with the cowbell knocking him to the floor; Chief Jay Strongbow was the special referee for the bout and gave Graham a fast 8-count after he fell outside the ring; the stipulations for the bout said the wrestlers had an 8-count to return to the ring instead of the usual 10 or 20; prior to the match, Graham was escorted to the ring by the Grand Wizard of Wrestling Womens Champion the Fabulous Moolah pinned Vicki Williams at 5:20 after reversing a monkey flip into a roll up Andre the Giant, Tony Garea, & Dino Bravo defeated Spiros Arion, WWWF Tag Team Champions the Yukon Lumberjacks in a Best 2 out of 3 falls match, 2-0, at 6:14; fall #1: Arion & the Lumberjacks were disqualified at 2:52 for illegally triple teaming Garea in their corner; fall #2: Andre pinned Pierre with a boot to the face and a splash. Good solid card, Backlund vs Koloff was a good match, with Backlund going over clean it probably ends this run for Koloff. The Graham vs Rhodes Bullrope match was a classic with a dumb ending! The 6 man tag tells me the Lumberjacks may not be tag champions too much longer. Maivia over Luke Graham is the right finish but if they want Graham to get a title shot it does not make sense, other than Maivia is really popular. Victor Rivera going over is a given, rest of the card no surprises. We will see what happens at tv the next time !
