Education should be the process of opening up ones mind to the infinite possibilities of the world. This should, ideally, be done as one wishes. The fetters of formal education in a country like India, kill the natural curiosity, inquisitiveness, flair, talent, aptitude, skill and interest in education for the vast majority of people in our educational system. I was lucky enough to retain my inquisitiveness throughout my education and beyond. A large number of people I meet, during the course of my work, have had it curbed. Words like, This is not important for your exam., This will not get you marks/admission in a good college. and Beta science le lo, bahut scope hai. kill the natural interest in other subjects. Teaching economics, politics, economy history of India, foreign relations of India to call-getters each year gives me the opportunity to revive students interest in, what are essentially, humanities subjects. The feedback is consistent each year. The common lines I hear are, I never knew this was so interesting, I wish I knew this earlier and this is so important, I wonder why we were never taught this. Studies need to be interesting. Our school or college or post graduate education system does not think about the interest element. However there is a ray of hope. The curriculum of the youngsters these days, seems more exciting than my times. A good start! What people young people still lack is the chance to explore beyond school books. I was fortunate to read literally thousands of books, mostly courtesy Manju buaji and DrVirendra Jain. Plus my mother encouraged me to read read and read! Comics, fiction, non fiction everything plays a role in life. So, read. Read everything you can lay your hands on. The most interesting things can be found on the most unusual places. My favorite is reading news from shopping bags made of newspapers! A very happy reading to you. Read a book today!
