Educators have an enormous opportunity to improve outcomes for grieving students. Unfortunately, the vast majority of teachers feel unequipped for this task. That is the opening statement to education professionals in a new website produced be a Coalition to Support Grieving Students in the states. It is the same conclusion reached by many groups in the UK also. Teachers have a major part to play - not just at the time of the death but throughout the years that follow, as the student faces each of the challenges of growing up, and at each of those stages is reminded of the absence of the person they grieve - the person they might have turned to for guidance and support. Teachers need to be competent, and confident,.to listen to the stories of deaths and to the pain and confusion of grief. This new website - grievingstudents.org - offers a range of supports and information in the form of short modules for teachers, senior management teams, school support services and communities.
