Edward III forbids you to join Isil Perhaps not so odd in principle, the Treason Act of 1351 mandates harsh punishments for those who adhere to or give aid to the enemies of the King - in the Realm, or elsewhere. It was under this last clause that the Irish nationalist Roger Casement was hanged in 1916, following a long legal argument. But the foreign secretary, Philip Hammond, has recently mooted reviving this law to apply to British people who swear personal allegiance to the Islamic State.
