Ed’s top hundred Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers - Why Do Fools - TopicsExpress

Ed’s top hundred Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers - Why Do Fools Fall In Love? Loved this record when I first heard it in April of 1956 on, of all places, the BBC Light Programme. Frankie led perhaps the most successful of the thousands of doo-wop groups which graced the fifties. Unscrupulous promoters (a tautology, surely) loved these a cappella groups - they were young, gullible and didn’t entail the expense of backing musicians. True to form, Frankie never received a cent for writing this song, aged 13. Phil Everly reminisced warmly about his early days on the buses which toured US cities, filled with young performers who had current hit records. Frankie was the only 14 year-old he knew with a 24 year-old mistress (and a heroin habit). Tragically, a destitute Frankie died aged only 25 from an overdose.
