Egypt is undergoing a major reorientation right now with regards to which forces it identifies and allies with on the world stage, which some folks are unable or unwilling to see right now: RUSSIA is mounting a determined attempt to capitalise on Americas diplomatic difficulties in the Middle East, pushing for greater co-operation with Egypt in a drive that could eventually lead to Moscow gaining access to the countrys Mediterranean ports. President Vladimir Putin is planning a possible state visit to Egypt as a way of exploiting the crisis that has erupted between Washington & Cairo since the overthrow in July of Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood leader. Amid fears of a rerun of the Cold War-era rivalry in the Middle East, Putin is understood to be seeking to resume military ties with Egypt after President Barack Obamas decision to slash US military aid. The Russians — who enjoyed close ties with Egypt from the mid-1950s until 1972 when the country swung towards America — appear motivated in part by a desire to improve its access to the Mediterranean.
