Eight years of speeches, petitions, trips to the nation’s capital, and meetings with high-profile politicians have finally yielded results for Moscow resident and Down syndrome advocate Sara Wolff. With the recent passage of the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, Sara and other individuals with disabilities are now able to take an active and positive step towards creating a better future for themselves by attaining a higher level of financial security. The bill was signed into law by President Obama on Dec. 16, 2014, and it will allow people with disabilities to accumulate savings for long-term use through 529-style savings accounts. Sara, 31, who has Down syndrome, has been advocating on behalf of herself and others since high school when she helped organize Lackawanna County’s first Buddy Walk to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.
