Eisenhower barn Gettysburg, PA . In 1950, Eisenhower found a run-down farm on the outskirts of Gettysburg, and purchased the farm and its 189 acres for $40,000 (equal to $392,089 today) from one Allen Redding, who had owned the farm since 1921.When purchased, the 189 acres included 600 chickens, 25 cows, and many dilapidated buildings dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries By 1954, Eisenhower and his partners decided to raise purebred Aberdeen Angus cattle for the show circuit. Farm 2, just south of main farm, became the hub of the new activity, with a spacious show barn erected to shelter the valuable animals. The Gettysburg farm allowed him to pursue his love of the outdoors, whether walking the farm fields or checking his Angus cattle. Ike hunted pheasant and quail in the fields. The Eisenhower National Historic Site is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, except for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years Day. The home, grounds, barns and cattle operation are available for public tours. Visitors may reach the site via a shuttle bus which departs from the Gettysburg National Military Park Visitor Center. The total land area is 690 acres . Bottom right photo is Secret Service monitoring station in a former milk barn.
