Election WON - Governing NOW When you hear that the rest of the world has a price on carbon and Australia will be left behind if we dont have a higher price and higher emission reduction targets please keep in mind the following facts as what they are saying is a lie: REALITY TRUTH AS OPPOSED TO WHAT THE ABC PEDDLES: - Not 1 significant carbon tax or ETS is operating in the Asia-Pacific. - The UN Framework Convention on Climate has 195 members. Only 34 of these have some sort of an ETS. Of these 34, 27 are in the EU scheme. - China has only one carbon emission scheme operating Shenzhen whereby the permits are given away for free. Not the numerous the ABC claims. -Chinas per capita emissions are similar to the whole of Europe. It has no plans to reduce the size of their emissions only ...has some plans to reduce carbon intensity, that is, the amount of carbon per unit of production. - Japan has effectively abandoned plans for an ETS. No economy-wide carbon tax or ETS is operating today. - South Korea has a plan to introduce some sort of scheme but will initially issue free permits and will redesign its scheme to not impact negatively on electricity prices. - New Zealand has a scheme of $1 per tonne. - USA has no carbon tax or ETS and no plans to introduce one. The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative covers several northern states in the US. But the price is $2.55 per tonne and it covers only electricity. - California scheme 37% of emissions whereby Australias current one covers 60%. Important to note is that 90% of permits are issued free electricity. - Canada does not have an ETS or a carbon tax. There is an insignificant Quebec scheme which is irrelevant as the province relies on hydro-electricity. - Indonesia and India dont have a carbon tax or ETS. Instead they have the opposite, a carbon subsidy whereby they subsidies carbon based fuel to make it affordable for the people. - Europe has a scheme of $7 per tonne. Covers a smaller proportion of emissions than the Australian one. Raises less money and is 1/18th of ours. Europe buys $1 per tonne carbon credits from third world countries. In 5 years it has only raised $500 000 where Australias scheme raised $9 billion in one year. - Not true that not one reputable climate scientist or economist endorses direct action. The vast majority of the governments of the world, certainly the US and Canada, are using direct action mechanisms to address greenhouse gas emissions. The ABC lies. The outgoing Labor government lied. The Labor party today lies. Fairfax lies. The world is not going ahead with major carbon schemes. Some are even rethinking them. It is foolish and destructive for Australia to continue with this destructive tax. theaustralian.au/opinion/columnists/the-great-climate-fiction/story-e6frg76f-1226741257158#sthash.H85YDDYD.dpuf
