Electrical vehicles galore! First the cabs and now the Corporations? A good portion of the governments one year was spent on relentless promotion of an electric car. Untested, un-researched and totally unnecessary when the nation is going through an economic slump. Most astonishing is how the government is thrusting its vested agenda on the nation despite widespread public outcry. First, it was the PM driving the car. Next cabbies were asked to buy it. Now the government has made the public corporations purchase these vehicles. Did the corporations have the need in the first place? More worrying is whether procurement procedures were followed in purchasing these cars. There are strict procurement rules, such as, not mentioning the brands in the tender documents. If followed, there would be many more competitive brands of electrical vehicles bided for. It is sad indeed that the people’s money are frittered away by patronizing certain companies when the whole nation is aghast at the merciless slashing of the Gewog budgets. Even more alarming is the fact that the Government has permitted many second-hand vehicles to be imported. Are we to become the dumping ground of the world for used cars? In the past, this was restricted, as Bhutan has always taken the highest ground when it comes to environmental issues, one of our pillars of GNH. Caution has gone to the wind, and come what may, anything to help friends, must be done. Does the government have no conscience at all of the trust they have been reposed with by the people?
