Elena Herrada for Representative- 6th District This is Southwestern High School. The taxpayers of Detroit put millions into it -- a new roof, a new track field. A new auditorium. Then the emergency manager closed it, stating that enrollment was too low. Then they let it get trashed, looted, and sold it for one million. The Phoenix Academy, across Fort St, was turned into an apartheid Educational Achievement Authority school. Then the EM stated that it had to expand to include high school-- because Southwestern had closed and the District needs 10,000 more seats for SW Detroit students. LaMar Lemmons, the warrior DPS Board chair in exile- followed the narrow provision left of democratic rights under PA 436 and got an alternative bid for more money. We went to Lansing on our own time, at expense to ourselves because we do not get paid and are provided no resources for the office we hold, only to be told by the Emergency Loan Board that the school will be demolished because it is the mayors plan. Criminals are running Detroit Public Schools- not the elected board. We do not get paid and we have tried endlessly to oust the emergency manager, whose time is up shortly. That is why the emergency manager ( Governor Snyder) is trying to manipulate school board elections. Then he can get a board that will vote to keep us in bondage.
