Held November 11th at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, 325 E. 1st St., Edmond, 11:30am -1:00pm. Todd Strader, Edmond Police Sergeant, will be the trainer for QPR, which stands for Question, Persuade, Refer, and everyone who attends will achieve certification in the technique. “We wanted to celebrate our anniversary in a way that is in keeping with our mission which is to serve and educate; to make mental health services accessible to everyone. It just made sense that this type of event fit us. QPR is a method by which lives can be saved. Anyone can save a life if an individual knows what to do when faced with a person who appears suicidal. Knowing QPR can be a valuable tool for our pastors, who are often called upon in some of peoples’ darkest moments.” Kathy Matthews, MEd, Communications/Development Coordinator, Edmond Family Counseling According to Edmond Police Department spokeswoman, Jenny Monroe, officers have responded to a total of 29 successful suicides, 177 attempted suicides, 382 emergency detention calls and 194 miscellaneous other mental health-related calls from 2010-2013. “St. Mary’s is honored to be a partner with Edmond Family Counseling as they continue to lead our community in addressing this important concern, and we are deeply thankful for the generous hospitality of Elks Lodge 2578 which will allow this meeting to conveniently span the lunch hour. Speaking personally, my life is indelibly imprinted with the memories of the moments I have spent with people in the depths of despair where self-inflicted death appears to be a reasonable alternative to life. This training will address those intense human interactions that force us to rely on the grace of God and live with us forever.” The Rev. Dr. Mark D. Story, Rector, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church All clergy are encouraged to attend. Youth Leaders and Lay Church leaders are also encouraged to attend. Seating is limited and reservations can be made by calling 405-341-3554 or online at edmondfamily.org. This is a free community event.
