Elvis and Michael Jackson It was Monday in the early seventies. I was in standard 6 walking with Gary Mulder along Voortrekker Road, Parow. I was relieved that I had not taken on Glen’s suggestion to head on to Parow “want ek smaak ‘n boer moer’. We had been watching a soccer game. I distracted him by enquiring about Mabel his alleged girl-friend whom he claimed to have kissed in the French way (more than once). But back on Voortrekker Gary was rambling on about his weekend adventures I was listening in a distracted kinda way and was glad not to be walking with the dread of being confronted by a gemoerde boerjtie and his tjommies. Then Gary mentioned how he liked Elvis. He touched a raw nerve” I had learnt a few years ago how just a casual glance of interest from Mr Presley in my mum’s direction would cause her to abandon us, her children. Soema just like that. It never occurred to me that it was highly unlikely that the King of Rock would ever find his way to Elsies, but of course it was the principle of the matter. With rising resentment I told Gary “But why can’t’ he just sing without shaking so much. Like he was having the stuipe”. Gary dismissed my critique with a “Don’t be dof. How can he sing without moving like that. He’s mos Elvis the pelvis”. I kept quiet for a few seconds and responded with the news that I much preferred Michael Jackson, a black laaitie. “What?” asked a shocked Gary. Dismay and confusion etched on his light-skinned, green-eyed face. “Is Michael Jackson black?” Did Elvis get the stuipe?
