Email I wrote about Noah s current writing - TopicsExpress

Email I wrote about Noah s current writing process... *** Noah and I were discussing rewriting one of the scenes he wrote today, because I suggested a way to make the scene more full of conflict. Its just a suggestion, for him to incorporate into his story if hed like to or not. He thinks about it for a second, You know Mommy, every book is supposed to have a problem. My book doesnt have a problem. I look at him for a second. I can tell this is bothering him a little bit. Now, I like what Im seeing, because this means hes really starting to internalize the writing process. Part of being a good writer is feeling your own internal steering wheel in action. I decided to just stick with the encouraging route, What about your shark? Isnt that the problem in your book? Kinda snappy, That already happened. He hasnt been letting me read his book lately, so Im not up to speed on all the latest plot twists. I just know what happened tonight, because he had me type while he dictated aloud, something we used to do more in the beginning. Now he mostly prefers to type it all himself. Trying to figure out what is going on, What do you mean it already happened? Wasnt the entire book supposed to be about the shark? Noah shakes his head, clearly getting a little frustrated (he doesnt like my creative inference these last ten pages), Youll see mommy. Youll see. And then he huffed over in his bed, clearly still working through his mind this plot issue with his novel. I like that I couldnt help him feel better. Like a true artist, my opinion isnt as important as his own. What impressed me the most about this entire conversation, is just how much Noah is internalizing the writing structure of a novel. This one hes writing now very well might end up being more like a practice novel for him (and then going through a major re-write with an editor to get it ready for publishing), and Im okay with that. Whats most important to me, is that Noah falls in love with the process of writing, and for him to develop the intuition for how to tell an engaging story. His own internal steering wheel. :) Even if he learns it by default (my book isnt working, why not?), thats okay--thats often how film makers learn tools of their trade as well--by making things that dont work-- Regardless of the end product, I think we can safely say were seeing strokes of genius in his writing already...sprinkling of seeds with the right nurturing can blossom into an extraordinary tree. With time, nurturing and love. I like that Noah is concerned whether or not people will like his book, but Im emphasizing the process... Results will come with time :)
