Email Plea regarding ACLU and Protecting Prayer for Government... Friends, We are aware of the awesome power of prayer. Our hospitals appoint clergy persons to visit patients and offer prayer for their well-being and healing. Congress begins each session with prayer from a minister; the U. S. Senate, House of Representatives and Supreme Court have a chaplain on salary to minister to the legislators and justices. We as a nation have a long history of involvement with the act of prayer and the belief in its power. Not everyone shares this positive opinion. A case being argued in the Supreme Court of the United States this week will focus on whether a town council can allow a citizen of the community to lead a moment of prayer to Jesus Christ at the opening of a town meeting. The case involves the town of Greece, NY, and two citizens who claim they were offended by the prayers offered in 2008. They filed suit with the help of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. A federal court ruled that there were too many Christians in Greece, and that they should import people of other faiths to lead some of the prayers. Now the case goes before the Supreme Court of the United States. Of the 10,000 appeals brought before the Court each year, only about 75 are heard. This case has far-reaching implications for all Christians. This is another example of the work of the American Civil Liberties Union. They have a war-chest of $335 million dollars to file suits against any who practice Christianity in the public sector. In Kentucky the ACLU threatened to sue any of the 174 school districts if they allow The Gideons International to distribute Bibles on the campus. In Michigan they sent a written notice to the school officials of Bloomfield Hills complaining about voluntary prayers by the high school football players. As the Supreme Court meets this week to consider this case, I ask you to pray that the historical significance of prayer in America, and the power of God to work in the lives of individuals, will weigh heavily on the minds of our Justices. Please pray that God will speak to these men and women, regardless of political temperament, and allow Christians in America to practice their faith without interference or threat of lawsuit.
