He specializes in the study of Modern Greek identity in a diasporic & transnational context over a wide range of fields, from politics to sport. Kitroeff was born in Athens and studied in the United Kingdom, where he received his D. Phil. from Oxford University in 1984. He taught at the Center for Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies at Queens College, CUNY; the Hellenic Studies Program at Princeton University and the History Dept. & the Onassis Center for Hellenic Studies at N.Y.U. before joining the History Department at Haverford College in 1996. Kitroeff teaches courses on European nationalism, the Balkans, the Ottoman Empire, the Eastern Mediterranean region and sport & society. His research has been funded by a variety of foundations, including the Social Science Research Council, the Center for Neo‐Hellenic Studies and the Proteus Foundation. He is the recipient of an innovative teaching award from Haverford College and is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the Hellenic Diaspora. Kitroeff’s publications include The Greeks in Egypt, 1919‐1937 (London, 1989); Griegos en América, 1492‐1992 (Madrid, 1992); Wrestling with the Ancients: Modern Greek Identity and the Olympics, (New York, 2004) & numerous articles and chapters in collected volumes and journals. Most recently, he was principal historical consultant for the documentary “The Journey: the Greek Dream in America” (produced by Maria Iliou, 2007, 86 mins.) He is currently senior academic consultant to a project designed to establish a museum on the history of cotton in Egypt, funded by the Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation.
