Embobut Forest Eviction-Case of Repeated Diagnosis of Mistakes - TopicsExpress

Embobut Forest Eviction-Case of Repeated Diagnosis of Mistakes That Never Got Solved During Moi’s Era. Back in the day when I was growing up as a young boy in the slopes of Charagnai Hills, EMC, I watched endless and merciless burning of houses, animals of people who lived in Kewabus, kamolakon, Tebe, Kamasia, name the list and now come embobut forest, the one being coined as the catchments/ water tower of the main tributary to lake Victoria. See folks, my village home sits in Mountain Top, I could/ have seen every Governments/ private vehicles that came and left. At age 3 yrs old, I was able to identify many vehicle as I could. It’s here that I perfected the art of knowing the make, model of a car from as far as five kilometers. That is not the point. The situation happening right now in embobut forest is a trivial matter that cannot just be dealt once and for all. It’s a so intricate that my sense tells me the only probably solution, and not the solution to find the problem but the solution to diagnose the genesis of people living here may require the succor of our death ancestors long gone before our forefathers. I am not, and I repeat, I am not an advocate of Kimala destroying the nature that once was and still the most treasured natural resources of the great county of Elgeiyo Marakwet. My Friend @Kimaya chelanga, and @Timothy K. Kilimo knows these very well. What I am utterly against is the manner in which the whole situation is being handled. My two cents tells me, the ancestors watching from the skies right now are cursing that my lightning strike to kill the blessed intellectuals of Marakwet who have gone silent to speak for the community suffering, while they see their once and only roofs above their heads being burned as they watch at distance. See folks, what pains me the most is the lack of understanding on the solutions, steps and approaches that needs to be put in place, or should have been. What pains me the most is when I see a 95 years grandmother being carried by his 65 years old son on the back, climbing treacherous hills as he guides the donkeys, dogs and the 7 sheep, their only belongings. What pains me the most is that these people who know no other place as home are going no other place other than to be back to the forest within the next few years/months per-say Okay, few people where compensated and I am not privy to numbers and names. 400k to move out, 21 days’ notice, so what?? Are these seriously enough to solve a problem that existed even before my father was born? What we have to understand as sons and daughters of the part of the world is that solution lies within. The answers lies in the intellectual sons and girls from this region. People who have come to this region when live in politics is hell or heaven. People who have come with Choppers, (helcopter if I may put some marakwet) Suvs, Toyotas, name them. It does not matter weather railway from Mombasa-Heaven costs 1.3 trillion dollars, or whoever a parrot, sycophant or broker of whoever. It will never, ever affect whatsoever the lives, and the living standard of the human people of Embobut, or rather now the evicted poor Kimala/ sengwer people. To re-crow that bamboo forest again will require the help of the local community, the sensitization of the local community about importance of conservation, how this will affect the lives of the kids, grand-kids. Etc. the next 100+ years. To make that place a beautiful catchments areas will need that the people evicted to plant tree. The Governments will NOT. To make this place again magical on earth, the community has to be involved. In the end, as much as we speak about conservation, and the locals don’t see a penny of the word conservation, it will keep on repeating itself in an endless spectacle. Let me not even talk about carbon credit because that is going to be Greek in the ears of few. **Again I love the Environments** **I am not an advocate of nature’s distraction, but people are human beings, they are not just numbers** Voice from Diaspora Links.
