Emergency Food funds available at Alex DSS-- Application begins Monday, Sept. 15... Local residents may be eligible for assistance with money for food purchases through the Alexander County Department of Social Services, according to DSS Director Cindy Holman. Late last fall, the local Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Board was notified that Alexander County had been awarded $17,971 in federal funds. These federal funds were made available through the Department of Homeland Security/FEMA under the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program (Phase 31). The local Board met and designated the funding to provide food assistance. Alexander County Department of Social Services was selected to be the Local Recipient Organization (LRO) and disbursed funds according to program guidelines ($8,985.50 -- half of the funding) to the community in January of 2014. Applications for the second half of Phase 31 funding will be accepted beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Monday morning, September 15, 2014. Applications will be taken on a first-come, first-serve basis, and will stop being taken immediately upon depletion of the funds. Applicants who received FEMA funds back in January will not be eligible for additional food assistance. The income guidelines to be used are 130% of the Federal Poverty Level and applicants are encouraged to provide proof of income when they apply. Participation in other mandated services provided through DSS would not prohibit anyone from applying for FEMA assistance. Eligible households will receive a $50.00 food voucher per household member (not to exceed $200 per household). Those with any questions, should contact Alexander County Department of Social Services at 828-632-1080.
