Emergency Preparedness at NMCSD By: Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Justin Galvin SAN DIEGO – Do you and your family have a plan in case of an emergency or natural disaster? In light of the wildfires taking place throughout Southern California, Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) wants to ensure its staff, beneficiaries and their families are safe and know what actions to take. In order to be better prepared for the unexpected, Lt. Gregory A. Halol, NMCSD Emergency Management Officer, provided a few suggestions. First, everyone should have a preparedness kit containing enough supplies to sustain you and your family for at least 72 hours. Necessities to include: bottled water, food, clothes, batteries, radio, flashlight, and important documents. Halol notes that emergency preparedness kits can be assembled in pieces or pre-packaged, but be sure to inspect the contents of the kit at least once a year. Additionally, have a specific plan in place for before, during and even after an emergency that all family members are aware of. “Establish a safe haven or meeting point in the event that the family needs to evacuate,” said Halol. But it doesn’t stop here, “Always have a contingency plan,” said Halol. Be sure to keep everyone, from your family and friends, to your chain of command in the loop. A valuable tool to have for all staff and beneficiaries here at NMCSD is the AlertSanDiego app. By signing up for the app at readysandiego.org/alertsandiego/, a regional notification system will alert your phone or email if you are being impacted by, or are in danger or being impacted by, an emergency or disaster. Another resource available in San Diego County is 2-1-1® San Diego. According to their website 211sandiego.org/, “2-1-1® San Diego is a resource and information hub that connects people with community, health and disaster services through a free, 24/7 stigma-free confidential phone service and searchable online database.” 2-1-1® San Diego works by linking callers to trained Client Service Representatives who will assess the situation and the needs of the caller and match them to the best and closest resource in the community. As always, Halol suggests following your local Fire Department and Police Department guidelines.
