Emma Gunterman, a relentless advocate for peace and justice who tirelessly lobbied for farm workers, seniors and consumers at the state Capitol in Sacramento, passed away on January 8 at the age of 98. Among the many causes she championed, from the early 1960s, was the farm workers. Emma and her husband, Joe Gunterman, who is now 100, were friends of Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta. Joe photographed the founding convention of the National Farm Workers Association, which became the United Farm Workers of America, at an abandoned Fresno movie theater in 1962. Emma was a dogged advocate who accomplished much at the Capitol without money, relying instead on her skill and determination as she traveled around town on her bicycle. She worked for years with California Rural Legal Assistance. See this obituary in the January 22, 2014 Sacramento Bee: sacbee/2014/01/21/6090926/obituary-emma-gunterman-98-advocated.html
