Emman Monfort’s career game inspired by matchup with Ateneo idol LA Tenorio Rookie Emman Monfort had a lot of extra motivation coming into Barako Bull’s game against Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. He was looking forward to matching up to one of his favorite players growing up, Gin Kings point guard LA Tenorio. “LA Tenorio idol ko yan kaya ako nag-Ateneo. Itinuturing ko siyang kuya. Tinitingnan ko siya kung paano maglaro sa PBA. I prepared so hard for LA, kung paano ko siya depensahan and paano siya i-attack,” Monfort told InterAKTV in an exclusive interview. The Iloilo native dominated his matchup with his Ginebra counterpart, scoring 25 points to Tenorio’s four. The 5-foot-6 pocket rocket, one of the smallest players to ever suit up in the PBA, said he hopes to continue the tradition of little men excelling in the game where height is might. “Ayoko isama sarili ko pero sina coach Johnny Abarrientos, LA Tenorio, dream ko maging katulad nila. Sila they inspired me,” Monfort said. “Ako naman my role is to inspire other kids also that despite maliit tayo, pwede tayong maging isang PBA player with hardwork, discipline and faith in God. Makinig kayo sa coach niyo totoo talaga yun.” Monfort set a career-high for the second time in three games, drawing praises from coach Rajko Toroman and Barako Bull team leader Danny Seigle. “He didn’t play two conferences because of the injuries. Now he’s playing big. Emman is a smart player with a big heart. He has a great character. He will have a big impact in the PBA and it’s good for the league,” said Toroman. “He’s awesome,” added Seigle. “It’s a great story because he’s one of those guys that when opportunity is presented to him, he will take full advantage of it.” But for Monfort, it was all about making the best of what is given him. “It’s the opportunity that coach (Rajko) Toroman gave me. I work hard to give back the opportunity he gave me,” said Monfort.
