TRAVEL REQUIRED: 50% or Greater, Travel is 50% of the time or greater. RELOCATION AUTHORIZED: No DUTIES: Assigned to floating plant to perform a full range of welding. Works on equipment as represented by dredges, towboats, barges; tractors, draglines, derrickboats, buoys, cranes, etc. Work involves planning, laying out work, positioning and clamping work, pre-heating metal, and maintaining temperature to prevent distortion. Uses templates, jigs, blueprints and other guides to repair, modify or fabricate metal items for all types of equipment, including repair of light or intricately made mechanical parts, which must fit in assemblies where close tolerances are required. Makes a wide range of welds from simple to precision welding. Works with light, heavy gauge and hardened metals. Work processes include pre-heating, brazing, bead welding, tack welding, flame cutting, pressure welding, and heat treating; selection of type of rod and size of tip to accomplish weld, determining heat necessary, setting up and adjusting equipment, maintaining proper speed, flame, motion tip angle and position to preclude desired results. Observes safety rules in carrying out work assignments to prevent injury to self, other workmen and to prevent property damage. QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Job Elements: Knowledge of Welding Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes blueprint reading) Knowledge of Metals Physical effort:The work involves standing, walking, stooping, climbing and crawling. Work may be performed in an awkward or cramped position. Incumbent frequently handles, lifts, or carries parts or equipment that weighs up to 50 pounds. Occasionally may lift and carry items weighing more. Working Conditions: Works inside and outside subject to injury from lifting, operating machines and using miscellaneous tools. Is exposed to abnormal noise; inclement weather; burns from electric arc, gas torches and molten metal; changing temperatures; and fumes. Danger to the eyes is present from metal chips, electric arc, rust and dust.
