Secretary’s Honor Awards Recognize EM’s Tank Cleanup, Closure WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Energy Department honored EM for achievements in its work to close high-level radioactive waste tanks as part of the annual Secretarial Honor Awards Ceremony Monday. The Honor Awards recognize individual and team excellence and achievement during the past year. Recipients are selected by the Secretary. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz presented the Secretarys Achievement Award to the EM team that closed four high-level radioactive waste tanks at the Savannah River Site (SRS) ahead of schedule in 2012 and 2013. The accomplishment marks a significant risk reduction for South Carolina and symbolizes progress in DOE’s legacy Cold War cleanup. High-level waste tank closure is a top priority of the Department. The team members gained public involvement by conducting educational forums and other public meetings to identify and resolve issues early in the project and to lay out the approaches for closing the tanks and assessing their work. They also received high marks for employing mechanical, chemical, and robotic cleaning technologies that ensured waste was effectively removed from the tanks. Team members include representatives from EM headquarters, DOE Savannah River Operations Office, the Department’s Savannah River National Laboratory, and SRS liquid waste contractor Savannah River Remediation. Another group, the Salt Waste Processing Facility 2013 Renegotiation Team, was honored for negotiating savings of more than $235 million for construction of this critical component of the SRS Liquid Waste Tank cleanup program. The team also accelerated the facility’s target completion date by more than 2 1/2 years. Techniques applied during the negotiation will serve as a model for future contracts within the Department. The team includes members from EM headquarters, the Environmental Management Consolidated Business Center, SRS, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Secretary Moniz presented the Secretarys Achievement Award to the Salt Waste Disposal Technologies Team — a collaboration among DOE program offices and laboratories, industry, and academia — for its work to combine fundamental and applied research, technology development, and other elements to develop and deploy new technologies for the safe and cost-effective disposition of large volumes of radioactive salt waste. This work enables a substantial reduction in the Department’s legacy environmental footprint.
