Enhancing Wildlife Habitat: Landscaping for Seasonal Food & Cover - TopicsExpress

Enhancing Wildlife Habitat: Landscaping for Seasonal Food & Cover with Native Plants at CT College Arboretum in New London on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2-4. When you choose a plant for your property do you consider its ecological function or how it enhances wildlife habitat? What do songbirds like the Scarlet Tanager or Wood thrush feed on in the fall, when the frost hits and there are no more insects to eat? What does the American Goldfinch really eat in the wild: does it only eat thistle from a feeder? In the dead of the winter, what do our resident songbirds feed on? What plants provide winter food sources at a time of food scarcity? Peter Picone, longtime DEEP Wildlife Biologist will teach you how to make a difference for wildlife in your surroundings by the kinds and the arrangement of plants in your yard. After a one-hour lecture we will head into the Arboretums native plant collection to see some of the species in real life. Co-sponsored by the Wild Ones CT Mountain Laurel Chapter. Meet at 33 Gallows Lane, New London, CT. $5/$10. Registration required. conncoll.edu/the-arboretum
