Eno month continues with another personal 10-year anniversary. Back in the day (Jan 2005) I had a habit of cataloguing new CD purchases in a little notebook (which I found the other day and states that Before And After Science was purchase on 22/1/2005.) I put that rather obsessive strain of pedantry down to the reality of living in sharehouses and suffering the occasional inconvenience of various CDs ‘disappearing’ over the years. Had Eno’s 1977 release, Before And After Science ever found its way into someone’s possession, I am curious what they would have thought of it; personally, I was a bit dumbfounded by it at first and regarded it as a significantly weaker companion to Another Green World (1975). However as time elapsed over the next couple of months I became fascinated with its eclecticism, arrangements and studio innovation. In the intervening years, if a little push comes to a gentle shove this is by favourite album by anyone under any conventional or outer limits genre – it is incredible and utterly indispensable. It also has one of the greatest titles for anything, ever.
