Entertainment for the Lazy Im beginning to exploit the technology available for home entertainment with the emphasis on home. That is, Im not for the most part trying to use material downloaded from the web. Rather, Im trying to exploit what I own in music and videos at home with as much flexibility as can be. So, iTunes makes possible for me to exploit all the CDs I own to create an archive of music. That archive can be downloaded and played through apple devices such as an Ipod which I have connected to a Samsung DVD player with a 5.1 sound system. This use is more or less routine. The main point of this note is to outline some non-routine uses. My version of iTunes, 11.0.2.26, permits you to point it to archives of other iTunes programs if their archives are in shared (public) directories (MS Windows) of computers that are connected to the same local area network (i.e., by wifi). That means guests in my home having computers with wifi can listen to my music with their iTunes and vice versa if their music is stored in a shared folder. But there is more. Ive installed a wifi network disk (Western Digital My Book Live Duo) connected to my router as a central location for my music with RAID 1 enabled for safety against disk failure. Each PC iTunes is pointed to this directory (in iTunes Edit>Preferences>Advanced change the media folder location to point to the directory in the network disk in my case, windows 7, the change is from C:\Users\Phil Lee\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media to Z:\Shared Music\iTunes\iTunes Media where my network drive was installed as drive Z). By pointing the PC iTunes to this central location, newly added music using one PC is available to all PCs in my network. Any of my locations can be used to add music. Visitors need not make this change. Once they get access to my network, they would use the shared ability of iTunes as described previously. I should mention that iTunes may be used for videos which Ive loaded to my Ipod and played through my Samsung DVD player on my TV or played via iTunes on PCs. Ive loaded several musicals onto my Ipod and home videos for playing this way.
