Ephesians 4:22-24 That you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness. I think everyone who believes in Christ, on some level, does battle with their former self. The trick is to call it what it is, a spiritual battle, and to remember and live like the battle belongs to the Lord. The new self that we put on is one that is born from the truth of God. Gods powerful gospel message comes into contact with our extreme brokenness and ignites a double-edged change in our lives. Our old self is threatened and sentenced to death, and a new self is born.
