Epiphany: I remember one of the places where I got the inspiration for todays column on fairness. Whenever Id hear conservatives complain about people getting on welfare and how its not fair that some of us have to work and others dont, I always thought to myself: Why is that any of your business? Is it because you think your tax dollars go to pay for those programs? Well, ok, but, with social programs, its more like tax pennies. And besides, liberals have to put up with their tax dollars going to pay for corporate subsidies to agribusiness and other industries, and they dont think thats fair either. Grow up. You pay taxes, and the government decides where the money gets spent. Thats the system. But what got me is that some of the same conservatives who thought it was unfair for people to go on welfare also bristled when the conversation turned to income inequality and whether the wealthy paid enough in taxes. One day, I was listening to conservative radio host Sean Hannity and, while discussing income equality, he literally took the words out of mouth: For those of you who are concerned about how much someone else earns, he said. How is that any of your business? Hmm. Thats the scent of hypocrisy. So we all want to be free to meddle in someone elses business but dont want them meddling in ours? Were quick to claim weve been treated unfairly but were certain no one has been? The pursuit of fairness, by the right and the left, is pure folly.
